Spread across more than 30 hectares of land in the Iskandar region of Malaysia, close to the border with Singapore, the new theme park will initially have 40 rides, shows and attractions, but plans are already in place to add a water park and hotel in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Once the total project is complete, developers claim Legoland Malaysia will be the largest destination resort in Southeast Asia.
“It’s incredible to see Asia’s first Legoland Park come to life,” said John Jakobsen, Managing Director of Legoland Parks for Merlin Entertainments. “We share our partners’ vision for the area in creating a hub for international theme park entertainment. Legoland Malaysia is truly unique and together with the accessibility to Johor, Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia we believe the park will be a great success.”
Targeted at families with children between the ages of two and 12, the new park will be accessible from both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. For international visitors, Singapore’s Changi airport is a 45-minute drive from the park.
Legoland Malaysia becomes Merlin Entertainments’ sixth Legoland park globally, following existing sites in Denmark, the UK, US and Germany. Plans are also in place to expand the concept in Asia, with new parks set to open in Japan and South Korea in the next few years.
